Audio drop outs with iMac fitted with a Fusion drive running OSX Mavericks

I have an iMac which is running a Fusion ram drive and the software is currently OSX 10.91 Mavericks, though the problem was apparent even with Mountain Lion.

From the first day I used it there were tiny audio drop-outs lasting a fraction of a second when playing music through iTunes. This would happen 5 or 6 times during any track and the error was certainly not in the source media. Sometimes it would be fine for hours, then it would start again. If you're reading this you'll know how annoying this can be. Now I play my music from an iPod wired directly into an amplifier, so bad has this problem become.

I have read hundreds of Forum posts regarding this problem and though many suggestions have been made, there has not been a solution that worked for me and I still have an unusable system.

I've tried:

  • Disconnecting all networking
  • Not using AirPlay
  • Different and even historic versions of iTunes.
  • Different audio software (Ecoute), an improvement, but the problem is still there.
  • Sourcing the audio media from an external drive.
  • Running with all other software closed down and minimal background maintenance tasks running.

And it is still a problem.

I just listen to music, I can't imagine how frustrating this must be if you bought the iMac to use with professional recording software like Logic Pro X

I am certain that Apple must be aware of this bug from the volume of complaints on the Forums, but they need to apply some effort in resolving it as it has been evident from the day the iMac Fusion was released.

No solution currently

There is no solution for this problem yet, I will post any updates here. There are rumours of a software update [OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Build 13C53], that might cure this, but it is only available to registered developers at the moment. And as usual, Apple tell it's loyal client base nothing lest they should appear to admit liability.

In the meantime, nag Apple using the feedback form on their website.
