Motorhome and Caravan site close to Caen, Normandy

A delightful discovery

Our pitch for the night - right in front of Chateau La Garenne
Did I mention they have lots of lovely cats?

We used this lovely campsite this year as being 30 minutes from Caen it seemed to be very convenient for the car ferry. It also turned out to be the best campsite we stayed in during our two weeks in France.

This is like no other campsite we have stayed in during the last 30 years. The following pictures will probably give you a better idea of what it was like than my rambling discourse. I shall try anyway...

If you are expecting a campsite with marked off pitches separated by little hedges, you are going to be disappointed!

Camping on the Stud Farm

The campervan site and gîtes (cottages) are on Clandon Stud Farm, run by Sue Smallridge Clarke where she raises Highland Ponies. The farm is easy to find, less than a mile outside of Aunay-sur Odon, at the end of a long picturesque drive.

We met Steve and Sue and they showed us around farm and we also got a tour of the fascinating 18th century chateau they are renovating, by the time we next return it should be completed. We then spent most of the afternoon lounging in the garden with them and their many cats, chatting, drinking tea and enjoying Sue's homemade cakes.

We pitched our campervan in front of the chateau which gave us a wonderful view of the ponies. When we woke early the next morning to make the Caen ferry, the ginger cat that I had made special friends with was waiting to greet me, sitting outside the back door of the camper van!

Idealy situated for the Caen car ferry

The farm is about 25 miles from the ferry port at Caen, so ideal for a getting that morning ferry or stopping over after a crossing. Having stayed here though, next time I would stay for a few days to enjoy the surrounding countryside (and the cats).
